Acrylics: Light & Shadow

Explore artist Rebecca Shelly’s approach to painting, beginning with drawing out the composition and developing values through a brown underpainting. This traditional technique provides a strong foundation, encouraging thoughtful observation of tonal relationships, structure, and overall composition. Students will build layers gradually, with an emphasis on light and shadow, before learning to incorporate unexpected color choices to achieve distinctive and expressive results.

Students will work on-site in the garden area, focusing on landscape elements such as plants and trees. Rebecca will begin with a demonstration on breaking down an image into simple, manageable shapes, guiding students through the drawing process and color exploration. Her teaching emphasizes both technical skill and creative experimentation. No prior experience with drawing or painting is required.
