About The Workshop

Brooms are an essential home-making item. They are used for tending our home space and rituals. A morning sweep is a meditative task that starts my day. Industrial machines are taking over crafts that were once taught and passed through the generations. Join me to make this simple home item that you will use everyday. You will learn the basics of making small hand brooms using sustainable materials that come directly from the earth. Regenerative materials are key for me as I continue to explore my creative work. As a youth I was frustrated with the origins of many materials for things such as jewelry making, printing, etc.  I love that each broom I make carries a piece of the earth and it's history.

Over two days you will be able to make a handful of brooms. We will work with both broom corn fibres, and Tampico fibres. For binding we will start with nylon, and if you would like to try a natural material I will have cotton and hemp on hand. The natural materials are harder to work with, but satisfying to use something that is fully natural. You will have an opportunity to make a Turkey Wing broom, hand whisk, small tabletop brush, and more. Although it could only take a few hours to learn, I intend to give you enough practice to play with design, make mistakes, and get it in your bones. I look forward to creating with you.
